Championing Excellence in Masters Swimming

I am excited to share my recent feature in Spotlyts, where I discuss my journey in Masters swimming and coaching. You can read the full article here.

As a distinguished swimming coach and athlete based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, I embody the spirit of high-performance sports. With a solid academic background in Sports and Athletic Culture and numerous accolades—including multiple gold medals at the LEN European Masters Aquatics Championships and the World Aquatics Masters Championships—I strive for excellence both as an athlete and as a coach.

In this interview, I share insights into my journey, emphasizing the balance between individual achievement and community support that has driven my success in Masters swimming.

Pivotal Moments in Your Career

My return to swimming at age 34 after a 13-year hiatus marked a turning point. Competing again reignited my passion, leading me to embrace open water swimming. Training for long-distance events, I pushed my limits by swimming up to 18 km in a session, building essential mental resilience.

Motivation and Competitive Edge

I find motivation in the unique blend of competition and camaraderie within Masters swimming. I believe athletes can continue to improve at any age, focusing on mastering the process rather than just winning. Continuous improvement and mental sharpness keep me engaged and competitive.

Training for Long-Distance Events

My training approach emphasizes endurance and adaptability, including high-mileage swimming and simulating race conditions. Key success factors include consistency, tactical race strategy, and mental endurance.

Balancing Commitments

To balance intense training with personal and professional commitments, I utilize a structured daily routine that prioritizes flexibility. This approach helps me avoid burnout and maintain focus across all areas of my life.

Coaching Philosophy at MareSwim

As the founder of MareSwim, my coaching philosophy centers on understanding each athlete’s unique journey. I foster resilience and encourage a balanced, process-oriented approach to training, helping athletes build mental toughness while pursuing their goals.

Common Misconceptions

I address misconceptions about Masters swimming, such as the belief that it’s less competitive or only for lifelong athletes. I emphasize the need for a structured, goal-oriented approach and the importance of recovery in achieving success.

Adapting Techniques for Older Athletes

My training techniques for older athletes include flexibility and mobility exercises, cross-training, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to maintain fitness while preventing injury.

Memorable Coaching Moments

A standout moment for me involved coaching a swimmer who overcame a fear of deep water to successfully complete a 5 km open water event. Another highlight was helping a triathlete enhance his swimming efficiency, enabling him to achieve his dream of completing an Ironman.

Advice for Aspiring Masters Swimmers

I advise aspiring Masters swimmers to prioritize consistency and patience, focus on technique, and celebrate small achievements to maintain motivation.

Future Goals

Looking ahead, I aim to compete at the highest level in upcoming championships, explore new challenges in open water, and expand MareSwim’s programs with technology-driven training tools.
