Perspective on Staying in the Game

Why I Compete: A Coach’s Perspective on Staying in the Game

As a seasoned swimming coach I spent countless hours on pool decks. Whistles in hand and strategy on mind. Stepping back onto the starting blocks might seem like a journey back in time. But for me, competing in this year’s national open water championships is far more than a nostalgic trip. It’s an essential aspect of my coaching philosophy. Here’s why I believe that donning the swim cap and goggles at a competitive age is crucial for a coach.

Keeping Up with the Currents

Swimming, like any sport, is perpetually evolving. New techniques emerge, rules change, and training methodologies advance. Participating in competitions provides me with the invaluable opportunity to witness these changes firsthand. This real-time learning helps me keep my coaching methods fresh and effective. Ensuring that I’m not just relying on outdated practices but am on the forefront of the latest innovations in swimming.

A Deeper Empathy

One of the core responsibilities of a coach is to understand the mental and physical demands placed on athletes. By experiencing the same pressures and excitement that my athletes face, I can relate to them on a much deeper level. This empathy enhances my ability to provide support and make strategic adjustments tailored to each athlete’s needs.

Pushing Personal Boundaries

Competing against some of the best swimmers in the country, many of whom could be half my age, drives me to continuously improve my own techniques and maintain a high level of fitness. This personal challenge is not just about keeping up; it’s about pushing forward, setting a benchmark of excellence for my athletes.

Inspiration through Action

I want to show my athletes that dedication to swimming doesn’t have an expiration date. By competing, I hope to inspire them to pursue their passion for the sport with perseverance and determination. Demonstrating that challenges can be met with hard work, regardless of age, I aim to instill a mindset where they believe in limitless possibilities.

Fostering Connections

The swimming community is vibrant and expansive. Competing allows me to engage directly with this community, sharing insights and forging connections that go beyond the pool. It’s a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow coaches and athletes, which can lead to new learning and growth opportunities.

Living the Sport

Ultimately, my involvement in swimming competitions is about living the sport I teach. It’s one thing to coach from the sidelines; it’s another to dive into the challenges yourself. This approach not only enriches my understanding but also aligns my coaching philosophy with my actions, reinforcing my credibility and commitment.

Participating in the national championships is not just about personal achievement but about enhancing my capabilities as a coach. Each race sharpens my skills, deepens my understanding, and reaffirms my commitment to my athletes and the sport. By competing, I am not just recalling the glory days; I am actively engaging with the sport’s present and future, ensuring that I bring the best to those I coach.

In swimming, as in life, we never stop learning, growing, and striving to be better. And sometimes, the best way to lead is by example.
